Book of John III Hospitality
John one of the 12 disciples of Jesus.
John is an old man now. From Ephesus he writes to his friend Gaius to commend him for the hospitality he has been showing to traveling missionaries, many of who John had personally sent to that church.
In a parting comment, John also praises another man named Demetrius for is good works, a man who has earned universal praise.
1:9 I sent a brief letter to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, does not acknowledge our authority. 1:10 When I come, I will report some of the things he is doing and the wicked things he is saying about us. He not only refuses to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells other not to help them. And when they do help, he puts the out of the church.
1:11 Don't let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God's children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God.
Hospitality was not only a cultural value but a matter of survival for the sojourning servants of God.
How might you or your church use simple hospitality to show the love of Christ to the people who pass through your community?
This short letter from the apostle John to a dear friend is about loving one another. We may say we have love for our Christian brothers and sisters, but true love comes only when we are fully committed to the God of love, the creator of love. When we claim loyalty to him, we learn to love as he loves - unconditionally and faithfully.
John , one of the 12 disciples of Jesus.
1:1 This letter is from John the elder.
It is written to the chosen lady and to her children, whom I love in the truth, as does everyone else who know God's truth - 1:2 the truth that lives in us and will be in our hearts forever.
Live in the Truth
This is not a new commandment, but one we had from the beginning. Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.
Many deceivers have gone out into the world. They do not believe that Jesus Christ came to earth in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. Watch out, so that you do not lose the prize for which we have been working so hard. Be diligent so that you will receive your full reward. For if you wander beyond the teaching of Christ, you will not have fellowship with God. But if you continue in the teaching of Christ, you will have fellowship with both the Father and the Son.
Book of John I Loving One Another
4:7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is born of God and know God.
4:8 For God is love.
4:9 God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 4:10 This is real love.
4:11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 4:12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full experession through us.
4:17 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we are like Christ here in this world.
4:18 Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it i for fear of judgement, and this shows that his love has not been perfected in us. We love each other as a result of his loving us first.
5:13 I write this to you who believe in the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 5:14 And we can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will. 5:15 And if we know he is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that he will give us what we ask for. 5:16 But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. Every wrong is sin, but not all sin leads to death.
5:19 We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the power and control of the evil one. 5:20 Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.
John I Introduction
The Book of John I is where I was guided to begin reading the bible and while doing this, I highlighted many of things that brought insight into my life. These are the scriptures I wish to share with you today.
Is there anyone who does not long for a strong family relationship? This is a book about a wider family of which we Christians are a part, a family that creates and maintains a strong sense of togetherness.
John talks about the family of God, the universal, worldwide circle of Christians, who are bonded together in a fellowship, or family, "glued together" through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
John is an old man now. Some say he lived to be 100, a ripe old age even today, but highly unusual in those days. Tradition says John wrote this letter at Ephesus in the closing years of his life.
Author: John, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. Probably written between A.D. 85 and 90 from Ephesus.
John wrote this letter shortly before he was exiled to the Island of Patmos because of his faith. John is often call "the apostle of love."
1:1 The one who existed from the beginning is the one we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is Jesus Christ, the Word of life. 1:2 This one who is life from God was shown to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and announce to you that he is the one who is eternal life.
Living in the Light
1:5 This is the message he has given us to announce to you: God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. But if we are living in the light of God's presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin.
2:1 But if you do sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who pleases God completely.
How can we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments. 2:4 "If someone says, I below to God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar an does not live in the truth. 2:5 But those who obey God's word really do love him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in him.
A New Commandment
2:7 This commandment - to love one another - is the same message you heard before. 2:8 Yet it is also new. This commandment is true in Christ and is true among you, because the darkness is disappearing and the true light is already shining.
2:9 Anyone who says, "I am in the light" but rejects another Christian is still in darkness. 2:10 But anyone who loves other Christians is walking in the light and does not cause anyone to stumble . 2:11 Those who reject other Christians are wandering in spiritual darkness and don't know where they are going, for the darkness has made them blind.
2:15 Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. 2:16 For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father, they are from this eveil world. 2:17 And this world is fading away along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever.
2:18 Dear children, the last hour is here. You have heard that the Antichrist is coming and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the end of the world has come.
2:27 But you have received the holy spirit, and he lives within you.
2:28 Continue to live in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame.
3 Living a Children of God
3:1 See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't know God.
3:2 We do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who believe this will keep themselves pure, just as Christ is pure.
3:5 Jesus came to take away our sins, for there is no sin in him. So if we continue to live in him, we won't sin either.
3:9 Those who have been born into God's family do not sin, because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they have been born of God.
3:14 If we love other Christians, it proves that we have passed from death to eternal life. 3:15 Anyone who hates another Christian is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don't ave eternal life within them. 3:16 Christ gave up his life for us. 3:17 But if one of you has enough money to live well, and sees a brother or sister in need and refuses to help - how can God's love in in that person?
3:18 Let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions. 3:19 It is by our actions that we know we are living in the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before the Lord.
3:21 If our conscience is clear, we can come to God with bold confidence. 3:22 And we will receive whatever we request because we obey him and do the things that please him.
Discerning False Prophets
4:2 Jesus Christ became a human being, that person has the Spirit of God.
If a prophet does not acknowledge Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist. You have heard that he is going to come into the world, and he is already here.
4:4You have already won your fight with these false prophets, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.
I hope that these scriptures from John I will inspire you to begin reading the bible. If you already read the bible, revisit John I and reread these messages.
